A chemical peel — whether superficial (AHA, glycolic acid, lactic acid), medium (TCA), or deep (phenol) — deliberately destroys the outermost layers of the epidermis to trigger controlled regeneration. For 3 to 10 days post-treatment, the skin is in a state of acute biological vulnerability: the barrier is compromised, the new epidermis is not yet formed, and the skin surface is raw, hypersensitive, and hyper-reactive to any external stimulus. The result is two-fold: micro-tears in the new epidermis — which is not yet structurally complete — and premature lifting of desquamating patches, exposing raw tissue to bacterial contamination. This mechanical disruption is one of the primary causes of post-peel hyperpigmentation, as melanocytes in the traumatized areas produce excess melanin in response to the injury.
